In 1978, a policeman chases 8-year-old Frank Morgan and catches him. Mr. Jarvis from the Youth Community Organization is talking about Frank with Tom and Pippa. From that moment on, they take him under their care. Mr. Jarvis warns them that Frank always creates a lot of problems. The year 1988 is coming. The Fletcher family includes Tom, Pippa, Frank, Stephen, Carly, Lin, and Sally. They're celebrating Tom's fortieth birthday. Pippa baked a cake for him. Tom makes a celebratory speech. At work, Tom receives the bad news that he will be fired, and worries. When he gets home, he discusses this with Pippa, as well as with all the family members, and says that everything will be resolved soon. Stephen has only lived with them for a few weeks, and he worries that his family does not fully accept him. Pippa tells him that he is actually part of their family, and Tom confirms this. Mr. Pierce from the Youth Community Organization says that Tom and Pippa can have their children taken away. The reason is that if Tom loses his job, they won't be able to support them. The couple tells Mr. Pierce that they can sell the house and move out of town to save money, which will allow them to raise children. Mr. Pierce is impressed by how much they want to stay with their children. Stephen continues to keep the secret that he practices karate. Frank wonders what Stephen does when he runs off to practice. Tom and Pippa tell their family about their plans to leave town. It seems that the children approve of this. Steven practices karate with an old friend of his late father and tells him that he is going to leave the city. The guy also says that he has not yet recovered from the death of his parents in a fire. The Fletchers put their house up for sale and leave for Summer Cove.

Sally gets her own room in the new house, and Carly and Lynn share a bedroom, as do Stephen and Frank, which is quite difficult since they don't get along with each other. Pippa puts family photos in the house. Lance and Martin meet Carly and find her attractive. Carly meets Matt and thinks he's gorgeous. Bobby meets Carly, Lynn, and Sally at Ailsa's store. The girl is angry with them, and Ailsa is unhappy that Bobby is bothering them. The girls come to Pippa, and Sally is especially tearful, and they look worried. Pippa has a friendly conversation with Bobby on the beach, but she responds with hostility. She blames the Fletchers for her arrest. Pippa offers her to live with them in the Caravan Park, but Bobby is not interested and takes a defensive position. The Fletchers are cleaning and making repairs in their van. Floss and Neville are helping them. In the middle of the night, Neville's scream is heard near the Fletcher house. The fire started. Frank, Tom, Floss and Neville are trying to put it out. The firemen, along with Alf, arrive too late, having driven their car right onto the veranda. Alf shouted where the fire was, and Tom and Pippa laughed. Ailsa asks Bobby if she set the van on fire. Bobbie denies this, and she and Ailsa have a heated argument. Ailsa hugs a tearful Bobbie at the end. Fisher tells Tom and Pippa that he believes Bobbie is responsible for the fire. Alf arrives at the Caravan Park he owns. He's talking to Floss and Neville, who used to work as circus performers, about a family coming to see the house. Floss and Neville are worried for some reason. Neville runs to his van and informs Bobby about this. He tells her to hide. Tom introduces the Fletchers to Alf, Floss, and Neville. They also find out that Sally has a fictional friend, Milko. Sally is walking through the Caravan Park, and when she gets to one of the vans, Bobby flies out and hits Sally with the door. Bobby runs away, and Sally tearfully tells her family what happened. Floss and Neville are pretending to be innocent, even though they knew about Bobby. Alf shows the Fletchers a house that everyone likes. Alf provides Tom and Pippa with a bed for free. It was an antique bed that had been in the house of Martha, Alf's late wife, for a long time. Bobby scurries around the Caravan Park, and then hides so that she won't be seen. Floss reads Pippa's future through a crystal ball for fun. While Bobby is hiding, Fisher comes to the Park and meets the Fletchers. His house was recently broken into and robbed. Bobby talks angrily to Floss and Neville, worried that he won't be able to hide in the Caravan Park anymore. Sally notices Bobby and says that this is the girl who ran out and hit her with the door. Tom and Frank grab Bobby. Fisher comes up to them and thanks them, because it was Bobbie who broke into his house. Bobby is then driven away in a police car. Neville talks to Pippa about Bobbie, whom he already knew a little. Bobby claims she didn't break into Fischer's house. Pippa is interested in helping Bobby. She meets Ailsa and Doris Peters at Ailsa's store. Stephen and Frank Fisher don't get along well. Ailsa, who knows Bobby well, tells Pippa about her. Stephen is doing karate on the beach, Bobby sees him and angrily declares that his family has added to her troubles.
