Overview

The serial begins with the murder of a young man, in what appears to be a drug-related killing, and the apparently coincidental death of Sonia Baker, the young researcher for MP Stephen Collins (Morrissey). As the deaths are investigated by journalist Cal McCaffrey of The Herald (Simm) and his colleagues (including Kelly Macdonald as Della Smith and Bill Nighy as editor Cameron Foster) it appears that not only were the deaths connected, but that a conspiracy links them with oil industry-backed corruption of high-ranking British government ministers.

It's a great story. Fascinating and informative. A persistent and resourceful team of journalists, risking their careers if not their lives, deftly circumventing the restrictions of legislation and inventively working with witnesses, digs into several unsightly and scandalous secrets of big politics. In addition to the interesting details of the corporate cuisine of a major London publication, some aspects of the life of British parliamentarians are also shown.
An exceptionally successful casting. A gorgeous star cast, with a perfect match of characters and roles, and even if none of the brilliant cast struck with something new, everyone perfectly showed their traditional strengths. They play very well, the characters are great.
In addition, the series is soundly and realistically staged and filmed, the editing is at the proper level, natural interiors and details, the right sound, including music, an interesting story with dramatic multi-layered intrigue and lively main characters. I confidently recommend it.
Language. There are a lot of accents, different ones, there are very noticeable ones, but I didn't notice any complicated ones. In general, they speak well and clearly, especially with subtitles.

It's a very good series with a great cast. Well-written characters and dialogues, everything is in its place and nothing hurts the eye. The plot develops in a spiral, the last two episodes keep you in suspense. It's even a pity that I didn't watch the whole series in one gulp - the effect would probably have been more significant.

In general, this series is about sacrifice. Collins sacrifices his family for a lover and a career, his wife sacrifices her dignity to save her family, Cal sacrifices his feelings for the truth, and so on. It's a beautiful story that makes you think about the sacrifices we're willing to make in order to achieve what we want.

I've watched this series before, but now I've decided to review it. And I went in great again. After all, the British know how to make timeless films.

I noticed one illogic. Cal looked disgusted that you-know-who had given the keys to Beenham. Although he didn't steal the keys, he could have let them in at all. Whereas they themselves broke into Foy's apartment without the latter's knowledge and did not reproach themselves in the least.

Everything is moving very slowly, it looks boring, and it won't be possible to figure out what's going on and why it's important at first glance...The intrigue somehow turns around only towards the end of the episode, when a policeman dies, I feel very sorry for him. Even if they hadn't killed him, it would still be a pity to take responsibility for the lives of almost a dozen people and decide what to do in the face of a lack of information. It's an unenviable situation.
I didn't understand why Stephen and Cal quarreled at all. Is Cal sleeping with Stephen's wife or something?
