I advise you to watch the 2016 South Korean film The Handmaid, based on this book. There's a slightly different plot, an unusual Asian aesthetic, and it's more explicit and violent. Initially, I watched it and was just shocked, in a good way, amazing)

It's a good series, not at all inferior to the "Velvet Legs" filmed earlier and also based on the novel by Sarah Waters.

It's a very interesting series, I'd rather call it a movie.
And Rupert Evans is very suited to the role of a scoundrel (I noticed it after the Endless World), but here he is a very attractive scoundrel! ;D

I rarely watch costume dramas, and I came across this movie by accident, but I really liked it.
Someone wants freedom. Someone wants money. And sometimes everything turns into love.
A love story. The story of deception. The story of the search, the realization of a dream, the collapse of everything.. and again, a love story.

The storylines develop as if in parallel and gradually begin to intersect, changing their direction at least twice. You'll never guess how the movie will end, the storyline is so exciting and interesting.

But more than the plot, I was impressed by the way the actresses presented their characters.

Elaine Cassidy, aka Miss Maud Lilly, created the impression of a real aristocrat, obsessed with a dream, for which she did not sacrifice her own love. Her thirst for freedom is no less than the thirst for love, which she has never had. But as it should be, you have to sacrifice something, put something first in the name of something. Despair, hope, apathy, anger and hopelessness.. To understand the motives and actions of the heroine, you need to pay very close attention to what made her the way she is... throughout the film, with gestures and facial expressions, she told the audience the hopes and fears of who she became for 180 minutes.

Sally Hawkins, aka Susan Trainder, surprised me. She wasn't just playing the thief. She was a thief herself. Gestures, a mocking and crooked half-smile from the corner of his mouth... secrecy, caution. These are the main components of her image. But how is the transition from the acute pain of betrayal to wild anger, hopelessness and insanity shown! She had a wild look in her eyes. Really crazy!

As for the film as a whole... one thing is for sure. He will not leave anyone indifferent. A touching, crazy story of love, betrayal, and again love, hate, regret, madness... and again, again, again — a love story.

I highly recommend watching it!
