I would say that Goya did it out of self-sacrifice and her unrealistically deep love for Tam. Like, to make him feel good, I'm not going to pull him down. Well, really, what can you not blurt out to convince a loved one that you are not on the way, when you really wish him well and realize that you cannot give him this.
