It was noticeable that Mr. Jarndyce was breathing unevenly towards Esther, but she really wanted him to remain just a guardian and a good friend to her, such characters are rare.
The series is full of nasty characters, but Skimpole pisses me off the most for some reason. I sincerely do not understand why Mr. Jarndyce keeps this ungrateful hang-on with him.
