I understand how much an unacceptable situation is shown in this film. And every adult should know the limits of permissiveness. I'm not protecting Humbert, but it was the girl who was disgusting.

This film is based on the novel "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov. And it turned out that the basis was a real story.

"Not long before Christmas 1948, a Philadelphia newspaper published the heartbreaking story of widow Ella Horner.

It all started in the spring of 1948 in the town of Camden in New Jersey. 10 — year-old Horner tried to steal a notebook in the store for five cents-this theft was supposed to be her "entrance ticket" to the circle of "cool" classmates, where she really wanted to get. 50-year-old mechanic Frank Lasalle, who was already convicted of violence, saw it, caught her on the way out of the store and said that he was an FBI agent. LaSalle offered 10-year-old Horner "cooperation" that could soften the punishment. The main thing is not to tell anyone anything about their meeting and be ready to serve the state at any time. The girl thought that she had easily recovered from the theft incident, without even suspecting that she would follow. Frank found out where the girl lived, and began to collect information about her. A few weeks later, Sally ran into the same man outside the school, posing as an FBI agent. He said his name was Frank LaSalle and she was going to have to go with him to the Atlantic City for questioning. The man threatened that if the girl refused, the government would send her to a correctional school. Sally, not wanting to upset her mother, told her that she would go to sea with a classmate and his father. Ella was so exhausted by her work that she was even glad that her daughter was leaving. The criminal even called the Horners ' House and talked to Bella, Sally's mother. Then she would remember that the gallant man insisted that there was too much room for his family in the apartment and they would be happy if Sally kept them company. Of course, no one would let their child go like that right now. Yes, and many parents of classmates know personally. Ella herself will later remember that the main motive for her was that she could not pay for such a holiday, and she really wanted to pamper her younger daughter.

LaSalle was already married before the crime. The man met 17-year-old Dorothy Dyer when she was still a schoolboy. She was responding to his attention because she wanted to run away from her father's House as soon as possible. The Lovers Left together, and the girl's father reported the theft to the police, but when the strange couple was detained, they presented a marriage certificate and remained at large. At that time, they already had a common child. Family life didn't work out. Dorothy even sued her spouse.

On June 14, 1948, Frank LaSalle and Sally Horner stayed in a hotel on the coast near the beach, introducing themselves as their father and daughter. The girl called her mother and wrote letters. So six weeks passed, and at the end of July, in her last letter, Sally announced that she was moving with the same family to Baltimore. Of course, Ella was wary. My daughter's letter ended and it was strange:"I don't want to write anything else."

Ella Horner finally sounded the alarm and went to the police. The patrol went to the address that was indicated on the envelope. The owners led the police to a room where a girl who looked like Sally lived. There were things lying around in the room, it was clear that the dwelling was abandoned in a hurry, and on the table was a photo clearly taken during the "vacation".

The swindler moved with Sally to Baltimore, Maryland. That's when, in Baltimore, as Sally will tell you later, Frank started raping her. To the neighbors, he lied about an unhappy single father who took his daughter from a depraved wife, next to whom the child will learn bad things. According to The Washington Post article of that time, the girl herself pretended to be his daughter, still afraid of being rewarded for stealing.

When the man lived with the murdered Sally in a trailer park in Dallas, their neighbor Ruth Janish began to notice the oddities in communication between LaSalle and his "daughter". She tried to talk to Sally, but the girl was afraid and silent. Then the woman realized that her suspicions were not unfounded.

Janice and her husband moved to San Jose, California, and the woman wrote a letter to LaSalle, who was friendly and recommended that he and his daughter move too, as there are many jobs there. In March 1950, the swindler and his victim move to San Jose. Having left the girl in the trailer alone, LaSalle goes by car to the garden in search of work. At the same time, Janish comes to Sally and learns the real version of events. She suggests that the girl call home. Sally's mother doesn't pick up the phone, so the girl decides to call her sister Susan, who immediately contacts the FBI. The authorities manage to save Sally before her Wanderer returns from the city.

When Sally was rescued, she spent almost 2 years in captivity. At the trial, LaSalle continued to claim that Sally, his real daughter, did not commit crimes either. Then the statement had to be made by the girl herself.
"My real dad died when I was six, and I remember how he looks," Sally said. "This is the first time I've seen this man in that shop. After these words, LaSalle pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 35 years of imprisonment. At the age of 70, he died in prison.

The fate of Sally herself was tragic. In August 1952 - two years after her return - she returned with a friend and friend from the beach to New Jersey. 20-year-old Edward Baker, who was driving her, crashed into the back of a parked truck. The driver survived, 15-year-old Sally died on the spot. During the funeral, flowers came to the girl's mother's name. Фр sent by Frank LaSalle.»

@RinaAri: Humbert is an unreliable narrator. The way Lolita is shown in the film is the result of his sexualization of a little girl. the romance is noble.

@whysolina: movies always embellish and romanticize everything. I noticed this tendency to shoot in such a way that the viewer sympathizes with very unhealthy people. The story that happened in life is terrifying. But if we discard this real story and judge only by the filmed plot, then the girl really behaved disgustingly.

I was reading a book, well, it was just hard to read, it was too detailed a description, like in the classics.
And somehow in the book it seemed to be written about a fictional codependent love story, and Humbert did not see that this girl was 13 years old, and her easy behavior infuriated me, because she was ill-mannered.

And in the film they showed direct love, although in the end, instead of protecting or something else, he led to sex and at the same time tried to find out who was doing it with her.

Well, somehow I didn't like it.

@BeataKatamadze: We must remember that in both the book and the film, the narrative comes from an unreliable narrator. Lolita might not have reacted that way at all, but through her crooked perception, Humbert saw it that way.

I don't even know how to describe it. Strange. If you evaluate the film itself, then it's definitely worth watching (even though everything that happens is disgusting), but here the picture is beautiful, and the actors, and the music. The plot itself is very, very ambiguous, wrong in its essence, but at the same time attracts all your attention. I really liked that the film practically does not differ from the original source, it is not often found in the film adaptation of books (is it really absurd? ). I don't think I would have watched the movie, but I can say for sure that it will remain in my memory forever.
