Description
In town for a job interview, a young woman arrives at her Airbnb late at night only to find that it has been mistakenly double-booked and a strange man is already staying there. Against her better judgement, she decides to stay the night anyway.
In this world, there is now an almost two-hour film explaining all the nuances of the question "woman/man" over the last century.
Seriously, this is another horror that is not only horror." You can put it on the shelf for "Solstice", "Male gender", "significant other" and others by the amount of subtext. On the qualitative transfer of topical issues of society into the plane of a horror film.
It is impossible to explain what is the peculiarity and merit of the film without revealing the plot. Go and see. And don't read anything else. I will only add that the film is also visually stunningly shot: camera angle, color solutions, attention to detail, everything is perfect.

And I must have missed something. Why is the movie called that?
I liked the number of Russian surnames in the credits, and most of all I was surprised that one of the "Urban Primates" wrote and filmed it 👏
Do I look like some kind of monster?" (c) Keith, convincing Tess to stay.
Tess (Georgina Campbell), who has an appointment with a famous documentary filmmaker in Detroit, is staying at a house she has booked through a well-known service. However, that's the bad luck, besides the fact that she has to live in the most depressed area of one of the most depressed cities in the United States, some young man (Bill Skarsgard) has already moved into this house. He tries to behave as politely as possible, he has a fairly plausible explanation for the mistake, but he still arouses suspicion in the heroine. However, Tess has nothing to do - there are no more vacant places in the city nearby, it's late, she gets up early, and she decides to stay, trying to keep her ears on top. Gradually, Tess begins to lose her vigilance, and an accidental discovery leads to a series of bloody events.
Wow, it's funny to watch "Varvara" almost immediately after " Don't tell anyone". If the latter was a straightforward hardcore thriller, then this instance is much more entertaining in terms of genre affiliation. I am becoming more and more convinced that promotional materials for films are often evil, which kills the magic of cinema. And those who are guided by the poster in the cinema lobby, buying tickets for the session, which will begin in just a couple of minutes, are not so wrong. The skill of current marketers suffers, and they usually dump all the information in the videos. It is surprising, however, that the trailer for the Barbarian did not reveal anything, plus I watched it quite a long time ago so that I practically do not remember anything about it. And if you are a horror fan, I advise you to proceed to the Barbarian absolutely uncluttered.
The name of Zack Kregger is unlikely to tell you anything, but if you watched the sketch show Urban Primates on the 2x2 channel in the late noughties and early tenths, then you saw him there more than once. He acted as a director, screenwriter, and actor there, but after a while he decided to test himself in horror. In short, I followed the path of Jordan Peele, with whom, by the way, they are friends. The more experienced Peel even watched the original material of the film and gave advice to Kregger. Why did I remember the background of the director? To the fact that "Barbarian" is such a sprawling sketch of "Urban Primates". Dumbfounded, full of black humor and unexpected twists, while exciting from beginning to end, wherever its plot turns.
Kregger started the project as a script for a short film, inspired by the book The Gift of Fear, in which the author urged girls to trust their instincts. Like, if you come across a dangerous man, send him away. The material and ideas in the course of writing the script gathered a full meter, and the story, no matter where it turns one way or another, still relies on this thesis. Kregger, of course. He partly pedals the theme of dangerous men and strong women, which is especially popular after the MeToo scandal, but he does it inventively and from different angles. Here, male heroes, villains, government officials, and even victims reveal this topic quite interestingly - so that you don't feel a purposeful Hollywood agenda. But in both halves of the film (in the middle there is a genre scrapping) there is suspense, and in the second there is also the trademark detachment of Urban primates - there will be reasons for horror, laughter, and disgust. Kregger himself describes his film as "Fincher on the ground floor, Raimi in the basement," and he's damn right. The main thing is that neither in the Fincher part nor in the Raimi part, the director is not let down by a sense of style and proportion.
Rating: 7 big-eyed hills out of 10
Cool operator solutions slip through in places.
Skarsgard even catches up with crypts in places without makeup, so it's not for nothing that he was given the role of Pennywise
And how beautifully the film complements the soundtrack..
I don't remember when I felt uncomfortable watching a movie..
And Tess's first reaction when she opened the secret passage was to quote my thoughts at the sight of this moment
If the movie or TV series or they both come in , then try again to convert a Dark Song movie . This is not a movie, this is a two-hour mantra and Rite rather , there is also an infernal sound (if I don't confuse anything) .
But all three recommendations are such that not everyone likes this engine , many spit =\
Unfortunately, that's enough for now.
But seriously, the film fire, no wonder it is listed in the list of the best horror films of 2022, catches from the very beginning.
There are a lot of moments that make you so worried)
If you haven't watched a good horror movie for a long time, I highly recommend it!
