Well, I looked at this almanac of horrors. Which of the plots was shot based on the work of Alexei Tolstoy, I understood immediately, I know as many as three other film adaptations of the Ghoul Family, and the story itself was read to me at night by my older brother when they were visiting my grandparents. But what Chekhov's story inspired the filmmakers so much — I broke my head, but I still didn't understand. For the life of me, I don't remember his stories about creepy dead grandmothers. In general, it was shot old-fashioned, and the characters speak a little grandiloquently, especially in the second story. But for the beginning of the 60s it looks very decent. It's funny to look at Italians and Greek women playing Slavs, with their temperament and manner of speech, adds a specific flavor and the Italian language, making its way out from under the dubbing, but not that it was bad. The only thing is that the count in the second story was too cute and out of place smiling. But in the third picture there is nothing to find fault with, it turned out to be just great. In general, I can't say that cinema is relevant today, but for those interested in the history of horror and the film industry in general, you can watch it, I didn't regret the time spent (especially since all three stories fit in an hour and a half). By the way, a curious fact that I didn't know before: the band Black Sabbath wrote a song of the same name and took its name under the impression of this film.

And about the Fat Ones. At school, we were wildly bullied with a sad Lion, who could hardly fit one simple thought into several thick books and abused descriptions of a woman's mustache by half a page. They say he is so great, and his work is adored all over the world, but at the same time, the existence of Alexei Tolstoy was practically not mentioned. And his works are much more interesting (especially for young people) and he is also appreciated outside of Russia. Films based on his works, for example, are still being shot (Le Vourdalak 2023) and graphic novels are being drawn (Ibicus is simply the most gorgeous). In general, Lech was cooler, but even they don't appreciate him and don't really know him 😔
