Overview

Set against some of Britain's most beautiful landscapes, The Virgin Queen explores the full sweep of Elizabeth I's long and eventful life, from the young princess to the successful Queen, who turns England into a major world power.

The drama explores her days of fear as a potential victim of her sister's terror and her great love affair with Robert Dudley. Some of the important political and historical events during her reign are highlighted as she balances personal life with the pressures of being a monarch. Her years of triumph over the Armada, her old age and her last enigmatic relationship with the young Earl of Essex are also captured.

The make-up artists did a great job - both Elizabeth and Letisse are amazing at their age, and they look like themselves, and they're not funny, and you can see that they're really older women, not two painted wrinkles. The queen even walks quite differently. And the scene where Elizabeth is without a dress and hairstyle is super!

I really liked it. Good actors, the main character has a very interesting appearance. In general, I watched it with pleasure. Anyone who loves historical films should appreciate it.

The main problem with such works is that the authors, instead of focusing on any one specific period, try to cover almost the entire life of Elizabeth, because of this, many historical events and personalities are not given enough attention, and the narrative itself looks crumpled. It would be possible to end this story on the death of Robert Dudley, it would look quite harmonious, and devote the rest of the time to the same Mary Stuart. Otherwise, it turned out quite well. Excellent soundtrack, good cinematography, costumes, scenery and decent acting. But Tom Hardy, indeed, looked somehow alien against the general background.

I liked the series. The actors, almost all of them, coped with the roles perfectly. Costumes, music, script - a wonderful historical project, I recommend it for viewing.

It's not a bad series, but I agree that the events were very mixed up. And yes, Hardy looks very modern, does not convey the spirit of the era.
