It is amazing how Philip tells his son what he, as it were, did to his sister, who was afraid of flying and at the same time is doing the same thing right now with Charles.
I think he sees in him the fear and weakness that he had at the same age (experienced an escape, alone in a hostile environment, no support from his parents, etc.) and he hates it. But Philip was able to overcome this in spite of himself, to build up a core, but the inner little Philip is also full of fear. That's why he doesn't like Charles as the personification of it.
At the beginning of the series, Philip's idea of sending his son to school, where he himself became a man (according to him), was understandable. Yes, a method that helped one is not necessarily useful to others. But still, it was possible to agree with Philip. But then we learn that Philip himself matured not because of the Spartan conditions of the school or the bullying there, but because of the death of his sister and the contempt of his father. According to this logic, something like the following should have happened: Uncle Dickie, so much loved by Charles and the Queen, should have had an accident on one of his visits to Charles, and the queen, in a moment of sadness, should have said something very insulting to her son, after which Philip and the director said something inspiring. In the end, Philip begins to admit his mistake and immediately blames his son sharply. Opinion about Philip jumps all the time from "Yes, Philip! You're right. What a cool character he is "k " my God, Philip! You're such a whiner."
@Galimzhan: the whole series just shows once again how Philip is an asshole normal fathers who suffered in childhood do not make their children suffer the same way, for example, Charles did it later
An incredibly powerful series! It shows the problem of upbringing and growing up to the fullest. I am very pleased that this season one of the episodes was completely Margaret, one of Philip and Charles. Flashbacks reveal the characters even more. Great!
A good episode perfectly reveals the personality of Philip, who, due to a sense of guilt stretching from the past, causes pain to his own child, while considering it right. All this pathos around his person and contempt for others, while he himself is actually a weakling and manipulator (the moment when he manipulates Elizabeth)
Philip has a very boyish character, which is very different from both Elizabeth and Charles. This is the root of all misunderstandings and problems, Philip had to go through difficulties to become even stronger, but even when he arrived at school, he already had an inner core - remember how he stood under icy water on the first day. Charles does not have this core, and he cannot appear at the request of his father. P.S. I think it was for this boyish character that Elizabeth fell in love with Philip.
Seriously, Philip?! Was it bad there myself and should I have sent my son to this barracks? Thanks to Charles for not killing his sons. What makes a man out of one will just break the other. Oh yes, team spirit is in Philip's style, especially a 5-month bachelor party!!! If we can't manage our wife, we'll take out our anger on our son. Wow!!! If the Duke of Edinburgh was like that in his life, in the sense of youth, as shown in the series, then it is understandable why the queen always seems so feisty. To endure such a jerk all my life. I agree, of course, that M.Smith plays this role perfectly, but what the hell is he slouching like that for?!! The Duke in all photos and videos is straight as a stick and only in old age the old man tends to the ground.
@id8005538: I went to read the chronicles in parallel... and from a positive image, Philip went down sharply... and it immediately became clear why Charles was like that.
An incredible series! I would say the best of the season.
On the one hand, Philip's desire to make a "man" out of his son is quite understandable and there is nothing wrong with that, but on the other hand, they correctly said here "what is good for one will not necessarily be good for the other." After this episode, I especially understood Philip's rage in the second episode, when a journalist on the ship began to ask him uncomfortable questions about his sister.
Really the best episode of the season! Very strong. I really enjoyed the horse racing from Charles to Philip's childhood. Yeah, Philip will mix his "inferiority" and resentment perfectly with his son. It seems to me that he sees in him what he himself wanted, but did not achieve - real power. And the scene on the plane is terrible, it's amazing that after such a tragedy, Philip controls the plane so easily and understands it or does not want to accept his son's fear....
I love Smith madly, but in this role it really causes hatred, his look, when he manipulates the queen, "how much am I worth?", already takes anger) which again only strengthens the love for the actor))
Considering all the circumstances and events of the series, I can only say one thing, I have never cried over an episode in all two seasons. But at the moment when Phillip was building a fence all night, trying to install a gate, and then he still asked for help, I burst out, sobbing uncontrollably throughout the scene... Everything is understandable in a person when there is such a psychological trauma of childhood, the guilt for the death of his sister, albeit indirectly, the accusations of his own father in her death, and the past of his relatives, which forever left an imprint on his reputation ... The series is simply amazing! Young Phillip's game is great!
Dickie takes such touching care of the boy, of all boys, Perhaps one of the most beloved characters for me, so successfully combining strength, masculinity and at the same time wisdom, gentleness of soul, custody of lost children and a desire to help his family.
And again, a check mark for those who claim that Lilibet doesn't care about her son, as she worried about Charles, but she couldn't go against her husband in this decision, because that's how they shared powers: she reigns in the world, and he is in their family. And he used this Film absolutely shamelessly.
Children in all schools, but especially in ordinary ones, without all kinds of privileges, are extremely cruel, they do not accept statuses, they mock them, and this causes trauma to the fragile young brain. I can't say that if you're not a royal son, you won't be bullied, of course they will, they always have to prove their superiority while they grow up, assert themselves at someone else's expense, but Charles, along with his isolation and unwillingness to respond with blow to blow, received a double portion of harassment. It doesn't temper the character a bit, but only causes huge damage to the personality, and your child will never forgive you for not listening to him, but bending his line, Philip. I understand what he wanted to achieve, and these are good impulses — to socialize his son, teach him to overcome difficulties, harden him, allow him to communicate with ordinary guys, but he did not take into account that it did not benefit Charles, throwing into the water from a running start did not go.
Young Philip conveyed his hunched gait so well, excellent casting, and the guy plays smartly. I experienced the horrors myself as a child, and decided that it would be useful for my son to know what kind of person he was... And from a very young age, I got used to proving something to someone. However, he also had a lot of arrogance. And he was a lonely child, abandoned by his family, why does he force Charles, who has everything on the contrary, to go through the same thing, this is a perverted form of education, so you can't give the character a core.
@chch93: Of course, such a tragedy, the death of a beloved sister, hits anyone hard, especially such a young one. Especially when your mother has gone crazy, and your father decides to hang all the dogs on you for some reason. And when this proud, devastated boy comes and finally asks for help, I practically cry. Yes, it's not surprising that his character is so complicated (which is still not a reason to complicate his child's life in the same way). He tries to grow out of him a semblance of himself, a berserker, and forces the boy only to go deeper into himself and his fears in an attempt not to disappoint his father. In an attempt to prove that at least somewhere he is the boss, Philip has caused serious damage to the child, perhaps even irreparable.
Once again, I am amazed at the ambiguity of the Duke of Edinburgh's personality, represented precisely in the series, all two seasons from love to hate and back, and the barometer jumps like crazy. One thing I know for sure: it's always interesting to watch him. The episode is stunning in its setting (comparing two lines of life in similar circumstances) and the semantic load, it reveals many problems and the causes of these problems.
nothing controversial in it, the injured narcissist with a complete lack of reflection and empathy, never tried to become their children's nagging (and the spirit he's a whiner and a weakling that translates into a despotic behavior) even in the TV series any good chances of Philip is not shown because I did not understand in which moment there are some written from the love of character 🤷♀️ it only shows the injury and lack of post-Soviet psychosine, where the charm and some old person injury is deducted all
@DianaIs: yes, I agree with you, + in reality, the Duke of Edinburgh was also a racist (this is his eternal theme of superiority, which is actually a disguised feeling of inferiority and breakage).
Philip is just a solid lump of untreated injuries and complexes, and, on the one hand, this causes sympathy, and on the other hand, it is not at all a reason to tamper with the lives of his loved ones.
@TsinoevaAlisa14: I remember the scene where Philip smites for a few minutes about 5-year-old (it feels like) Charles for not being able to decide to kick meat until his brother Michael comes and encourages the boy to serve a couple of humorous phrases. So who raised their son invertebrate, huh? First, he spoiled the child's psyche, and then he blames him for this.
If the funeral hadn't been in winter. it would definitely rain) it would look damn stylish) and in the Anglopedia Charles praises Gordonstoun. but that's many years later. when the memories are not so sharp. The Independent writes: "The Queen was upset by the way Prince Philip is portrayed as a father indifferent to his son's well-being. ... She was particularly annoyed by the scene in which Philip does not sympathize with a clearly upset Charles when he flies home with him from Scotland. It just couldn't happen."
@id_evergreen: that's for sure. I would say that sometimes, very rarely, Philip expresses any valuable thoughts, for example, when he convinced the Queen to allow the coronation to be broadcast on television for reasons of security and preservation of the monarchy. But that's probably 1% of his entire screen presence, even surprised at moments like this that he can be so smart and far-sighted.
I disagree with most of the comments and support Philip's decision. Mama's boys need to be corrected with drill. Otherwise, they then grow up crying and without a rod (which, by the way, these same women who pity Charles in the comments love so much). Yes, it's hard. But this is a great school of life, where you can make friends with whom you have overcome difficulties. The tragedy in the series is too exaggerated. And we will all have injuries, regardless of the type of college and family priorities, the question is how do you solve problems in life. You decide....and you're not working on some mythical injuries. And Eton College is not an alternative to the Scottish school here (because there is still hazing and racism at Eton), but an opportunity to hide under my mother's skirt. Which is unacceptable for a man.
It was striking that Elizabeth actually put the interests of the crown above the interests of her own child and even the heir to this very Crown. She always found an opportunity to insist on her own. So, she fought for the name of the dynasty, but did not stand up for her son, although he suffered for years, this is not just a decision of one day or one year((( Such a terrible series and such incredible views of Scotland...

The best episode of the season
and in the Anglopedia Charles praises Gordonstoun. but that's many years later. when the memories are not so sharp.
Such a terrible series and such incredible views of Scotland...
