I don't see any honest rivalry on his part, he saw perfectly well from the very beginning that Phoenix fell in love with her very much, they spent all their time together. And he's just a stranger.

I'm more impressed with the Lord of the Night, but I don't like that he lied to Grape that Phoenix has a crowd there...
