Avatar is still an American cartoon, although they were inspired by anime stylistics. I do not watch anime myself, I am very annoyed by the drawing and antics with stupid expressions on their faces (there are also several such grimaces in the Avatar in the initial episodes). I do not exclude that anime has excellent plots and well-written characters, but the popularity of anime is noticeable and people of different ages watch it. But drawing scares me more than a potentially interesting plot.
I recommend taking a look at Avatar anyway: The Last Airbender and it still has a more adult sequel 70 years later - The Legend of Korra. Both are good. The beginning of the Avatar may seem a bit childish, but the characters grow up with each episode practically. A very interesting world and characters, I advise you.
