A good thing, the meaning is revealed almost at the very end, so it may seem boring.

Very interesting anime. It's cool that throughout all the episodes you have to think, try to figure out what's going on, and it's really not boring at all. So also a non-standard presentation, surprisingly fresh and original.
A couple of episodes seem to be filler, slightly moving away from the key characters and the storyline. But it is precisely the ninth episode with gossip that shows in more detail the birth and transformation of a kind of legend and universal obsession with it.

One little lie about a dog threw the world into chaos. But if there was no guy with a bat, then who attacked people in a desperate situation... it looks like they are themselves... No one else is to blame but ourselves.

Still, Satoshi Kon was a genius.
Apparently, not everyone looks and thinks about what they see. Unfortunately, the visual, typical of Satoshi Kon's works, sometimes interferes with this, but the whole problem is that without it, the thought will be even less obvious.
I mean all this to the fact that among the commentators there were those who clearly did not see a rather obvious thought. What is the interest of this director's works, he usually reveals topics about the influence of something from the outside on a person's life and soul.
Let's remember the "Perfect Blue". There, the life of a young actress and a former idol almost goes downhill just because of one crazy fan and the image of the heroine that he invented for himself. The actress of the millennium shows us the life of one woman at all. Paprika thinks about what terrible things can be done if you just get access to other people's dreams.
But now Satoshi poses a diametrically opposite question. And how can our own escapism affect our life, soul and psyche? Yes, the guy with the bat was created by a girl who lied out of fear of an excessively strict father, but life was given to him not by this girl alone, but by everyone who runs away from an unpleasant and sometimes harsh reality. Stress at work, a sudden rival who shouldn't be so good, a split personality and everyone else who somehow found a reason to say to themselves, "It's not my fault. It's all the guy with the bat"
Satoshi Kon poses the problem that people are not ready to accept their mistakes as part of themselves and try to distance themselves without learning anything. Which in the end leads to the death of an entire city that is mired in self-pity.
As for me, this stream of living, devouring dirt is an excellent illustration of what self-pity and self-justification really are. You don't need to look for a guy with a bat to say that "He's a villain, and I'm good," but just accept your imperfection and become better today than you were yesterday.

Well, a fly in the ointment to be fair to the end.
Three filler episodes that don't add anything to the plot. It was very painful to watch them.
Yes, they are interesting in themselves, but within the framework of this series it looked very bad. An episode about a trio of people who want to go to Isekai is a black comedy. The episode about gossip girls is neither fish nor meat at all, the only thing that it intertwined interestingly with the episode about the anime producer. An episode about anime...also, in fact, about nothing.
There is a feeling that these are poorly squeezed corners, or it was necessary to stretch the timing.
But these three episodes are not worth watching. They're a waste of time.
Bottom line: I'm glad I watched this title. I used to be squeamish because I thought I was overhyped and I'm glad I was wrong. But not everyone who looks at it will be able to understand. It will seem either boring or chic, but probably for the wrong reasons (although everyone has their own). Is it necessary to watch? I think it is desirable, but no one has the right to force you to do it.
I hope that my review will help you decide to view it.

@vk507653: It's strange that you first praise Satoshi, then tell him to throw out the series. These three episodes just show the denouement of the plot. Only it becomes clear after watching the last episode.

The girl attacks herself->comes up with an idea->everyone else picks up, the general hysteria and impunity of murders are well shown in these series, so here are "a few guys with a bat", as the deceased boy with a bat himself said earlier - everyone becomes them when it is profitable

@Lolo_holo: Nothing strange really. Agent paranoia is a great series, but not without flaws, and I criticize them for them. If I only admired the creation and kept silent about the moments that I think do not fit into the title, then what would such an opinion be worth at all?
I'm sorry, but I personally am annoyed to the point of gnashing my teeth by comments where people write only about how they liked the title. It seems that they did not watch the series, but simply wrote what the others write.
Now specifically about those episodes. Now, of course, 2 years have passed since the viewing, but as far as memory suggests, the emphasis in the described episodes is not at all on the fact that people feel impunity. Here, for example, is an episode about suicides. What does he add to the overall story? This is not a separate line in the anime plot, the characters are not important to the main plot, and the tone of the narrative is out of the overall picture. The episode about the producer is also focused exclusively on him and his family, the tone, of course, is more appropriate to the overall story, but in general it does not benefit the overall plot. Taking into account your comment, I understand that gossip girls still make an interesting addition to the world, but again, it does not affect the main plot and its perception in any way.
Again, I didn't really mean that these episodes should be thrown out, but they are very poorly placed in the plot. If it were like optional special episodes at the end of the season, where it would be told what was going on outside the main plot, it would be much better. Or, alternatively, they can be placed between different story arcs as an interruption, so that the viewer takes a breath and then they would not be so out of the general narrative. And then they were just shoved in with a huge stake the size of a quarter of the series.
Perhaps I should reconsider and now I will take it all differently, but then I took it exactly as I described.

this is my first introduction to the world of Satoshi Kona. I haven't got to "paprika" or "akira" yet, but I will definitely get there!
the world, of course, is amazing. I like such madness with mysticism, I do not consider it "nonsense", as I have heard from some. as already written above, there is one conclusion here: the ability to take responsibility for yourself, your actions, your pain. to blame all the failures and sorrows is in fact very, very simple.
I'll look at more reviews and analyses, maybe I'll find what I couldn't see.
a separate plus for drawing and opening.

@alkotiik: They are very similar to paprika. I would even call the agent of paranoia a gloomy paprika. If you liked it, then I advise you to watch Perfect Blue and the first episode of Memories.

@alkotiik: I can't help but correct it, I'm sorry! "Akira" is Otomo, not Kona, but I think you've figured out and familiarized yourself with all the works of these animation classics over the years 🙏

I remember my mixed impressions of "Paprika" and how I rather liked it than not, but I am absolutely delighted with "Agent Paranoia"! This anime has sunk into my soul so much that I want to review it again. And then, probably, after some time yet. I really like this psychedelism, which, in fact, is a reflection of emotions, and not directly of the real world, and it's amazing. The main thing is to think about what you see, a little more than just "gygy oneme", and then an incredible multitude of meanings will open up. Amazing anime.
