Without reading the novella by Nikolai Leskov "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk district" it is difficult to evaluate this film. Since I read it, I can say that the mood and especially this boredom of Katerina (Catherine) was very well conveyed. It's just a pity that the character of Sergei (Sebastian) was not revealed: in the book, he strongly influences Katerina, literally pushes her to murder (and anyway, he was with her only because of her status as a merchant's wife). Here he is a victim of circumstances, a poor man who was poisoned by this woman. After reading the story, the question arose — who is worse, Katerina or Sergei? But in the film, everything is obvious. The ending was changed (one might say shortened), thus removing all this boundless love of Katerina for Sergei, for the sake of which she is ready to kill, but at the same time the same lonely and bored image of Catherine is also an excellent conclusion to such a dark film.
I would also like to know more about Anna and Sebastian's relationship... Was there something between them or not? Either I didn't understand, or this moment was deliberately left open to the audience's thoughts.
