Overview

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is set during the Napoleonic Wars in an England where magic once existed and is about to return. So begins a dangerous battle between two great men.

1806. England is beleaguered by the long war with Napoleon and centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation's past. However, scholars of this glorious history discover that one remains — the reclusive and skillful Mr. Norrell. His displays of magic soon thrill the nation. In London, he raises the beautiful Lady Pole from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French.

Soon the cautious and fussy Norrell is challenged by the emergence of another magician: the brilliant novice Jonathan Strange. While trying to secure his beloved Arabella's hand in marriage, he meets a vagabond, the magician of Threadneedle Street, Vinculus, who tells him he is destined to be a great magician. Young, handsome and daring, Strange is the very antithesis of Norrell. A dangerous battle ensues between the two great men. Their obsessions and secret dabblings with the dark arts will cause more trouble than they can imagine.

We all need more bromance! Not every show in the collection is devoted exclusively to male friendship, but it does figure prominently in the plot.

@juzzt: He hates all people together. It's just that you can play with the weak or not well-versed in magic, manipulate them, and Strange, without realizing it, ruined the whole game. And if you want, I can explain in more detail...
in British mythology, elves were divided into Seelie and Unseelie (Good and Unkind) courts. The Unseelie court, where this elf comes from, is famous for its evil disposition, cruelty and other bad things. They are not just unkind, they are treacherous, treacherous - in short, it is better not to mess with them. :) And the main reason for their hatred of humans, according to legend, is simple and related to Christianity: elves have no souls, therefore the Kingdom of heaven is closed to them, they cannot see Christian salvation. It really pisses them off. This is mentioned in the original novel by Suzanne Clark (although the context must be taken into account - there is a lot of irony and deliberate confusion that arose due to the fact that magicians often lied in their books).

@TrueGodOfDeath: Strange just represents a different type of wizard (or even more broadly, a scientist). Norrell is one of those who digs into books, draws knowledge from the experience of previous generations, works on the principle of "measure seven times..." and, in fact, is afraid to open up to new things, whereas Strange is an incredible scamp, but a nugget - he grasps on the fly and, if you look at it, does not even learn, but immediately acts - on a hunch, based on instincts, in the style of "I don't know how, but I'm doing it, and come what may!"In short, one is a researcher, the other is an experimenter.

we need a spin-off of "Better write to Childermass."

Eeeee.... It was beautiful. And it's very sad. Yes, some things happened too quickly compared to the events in the book, and some moments were not included at all, but this did not affect the series in any way. He's still great. It's a pity that (so far) there is no book sequel, but for some reason I don't want to continue without a literary source.
Carvel and Marsan are amazing. They should be rewarded at least for the best hairstyles in this series.

It can take a long time to describe what a wonderful series... But for me, Strange's phrase became the quintessence: Tell Norrell... I am coming. And that look is bone-chilling...

I'm waiting for the grand finale!
