Generally,
1) less than 1% of the population survived. This means that everywhere there is a huge mass of empty houses, resources, fuel, whatever. And in these conditions, people manage to steal and fight for housing. It would seem that what is the problem - take anything, there are a lot of resources, what is the point of conflict?
2) people don't get guns at all. 2 fucking double-barreled shotguns are ridiculous. And by the way, every city has a police station with guns.
3) people don't care about their safety at all. It would seem that it would be easier to at least block the entrances to the dwelling with cars, at least close the doors, fill the windows with sandbags or something else. This will help to avoid at least unexpected attacks.
4) I'm not talking about such basic things that you can leave an armed guard at the car, at night, again, it would be nice to take turns on duty..
In general, the scriptwriters did not think for a minute about the question of how to really survive in such conditions.
