One of the best episodes! For the first time, we don't know the killer until the very end. And the second appearance of Robert Vaughn, moreover, again with a marine theme.
I had to rewind the entire episode from the very beginning. At first, you think one character is a murderer, and then they kill him and it seems that some kind of stupid scatter of incomprehensible phrases and words begins, and everything is very strange. If I had watched on TV, I would definitely not have understood anything, especially since the scene with the murder of the alleged murderer is very small and it is easy to miss it - that's what happened to me. And then I reviewed the beginning of the series - we are not shown the very moment of the murder, we only see its concealment. A very tricky series!
The series at first seems very strange, or, to be more precise, unusual. Even doubts have begun, but will this experiment on the format be successful? After all, for the first time we don't see the killer, we just see someone covering his tracks. To be honest, watching the subsequent fluttering of Colombo and his team in the investigation, I felt confused at first, because there was no basic fact that gave their actions meaning - the knowledge of "whodonit", but gradually my brain woke up and the excitement to do it before Colombo. Spoiler alert - I didn't finish my line by settling on a meditating girl. And then there was a clear disadvantage of the translation, which is considered a classic. For example, it was completely unclear why a young sergeant using a pseudonym instead of his name was launched under the wing of the lieutenant. In the original, it's all very subtly wrapped up in the search for a role model, and the scene at the end, when Columbo suddenly notices that Mac is carrying a raincoat with him and gets an answer, they say, "you never know when it's going to rain," very sweetly hints that this extremely capable comrade has found his role model. It's just a pity that the translation has crumpled and smeared it very much(
@bluebellaza: and yes, the most kick-ass thing is when in the finale, at an absolutely wonderful final moment, which is exactly what it feels like, Colombo says in translation that he is sailing for a walk to the yacht club, when, as in the original, he is sailing there to his wife.
@bluebellaza: there are (in translation) a lot of flaws, for example, the phrase eat, drink and be merry was translated as "eat, drink and don't think about your husband."
Everyone here praises the series so much, but it seemed to me the worst in the series for all five seasons and at the same time by a very large margin.
There could be a new format, the concept is quite interesting. Beautiful location shots. But the lieutenant himself spoils everything. From the very first appearance on the screen, he himself is like this wife, either fatly swollen or under some kind of drugs: he throws some stupid looks, talks strangely and very slowly, repeats everything many times. At the same time, they added some very strange humorous sketches of a screaming Columbo. If in all the previous episodes the lieutenant seemed to be an intelligent and charming person, just a little sloppy and eccentric, then here he seems to be somehow mentally underdeveloped. We added two (!) sidekicks at once, who just follow him around. This sergeant had already appeared before, and in the previous episode there was Sergeant Wilson, but in previous episodes they somehow diluted the atmosphere, and here they are some kind of tails. There are some stupid jokes connected with Mac, none of which I understood. All this adds up to some incredibly bizzare spectacle, some kind of parody of the series I already love, which is very hard to watch.
And the "gotcha" series is generally some kind of laugh. What prevented this guy from saying "Okay"? Why did he say it wasn't his watch? I know why. To finally end this series and my suffering.
