why it's worth watching:
- Nolan refused special effects when recreating the explosion. How? Intrigue
- Cool cast: Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders), Emily Blunt (The Edge of the Future), Matt Damon (Ben Affleck's partner in the film Dogma), Robert Downey Jr. (Air America, Iron Man), Florence Pugh (Little Women, Black Widow).
It promised to be Rami Malek, Ben Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane Dehaan, Jack Quaid and Matthew Modine.
- This is Nolan. A living classic
- This is an important historical film. The Oppenheimer bomb is a key milestone of modern civilization. "We knew the world wouldn't be the same anymore. Someone was laughing, someone was crying. I remembered the lines from the Bhagavad-gita. Vishnu tries to convince the Prince to fulfill his duty and in order to impress him, he assumes his multi—armed appearance, saying: "I am Death, the Destroyer of Worlds" - this is how the physicist described the sensations after the first test.

The film left a lot of impressions. This is a very complex and thoughtful picture about the politics of that time, the Second World War, the Communists, that's all about the influence of politics on man and the influence of man on the world. You need to keep in mind that this is not a movie where there are a lot of events, intrigues and you sit with your mouth open and forget to breathe. This is a film about a person and his story, about a person, about a complex moral choice, about how this moral choice is re-reflected in the psyche of this person. In general, it is necessary to look, think and delve into. According to the feelings after watching, I would say somewhere 7.5/10. Cinema is clearly not for everyone. I will review it, because I didn't understand everything. But these reflections on the creation of the atomic bomb and the impact of this invention on the world and on the very existence of the world are now relevant again and the film is very relevant, unfortunately. I should add that I generally adore Richard Feynman - he is one of the physicists who participated in the creation of the atomic bomb. His lectures and books about him influenced me a lot. Feynman was also shown in the film, it's true, without replicas, but he played the drums, and the actor played him perfectly, here I was just delighted

Definitely an important and necessary film of the 21st century, but definitely not Nolan's best film. The atmosphere is good. Acting is on top. Only Nolan could have assembled such cool actors for episodic roles. After all, it's a kind of event to be in a Nolan movie. But in fact, the film felt like a retelling of Wikipedia. Spoiler - an atomic bomb will be created.
At the same time, it resembles watching a Game of imitation, Trumbo and Air.

The film is worth watching in the cinema to support this kind of cinema.

The film will definitely appeal to people who are fond of physics / science, it is of course slightly delayed - as for me, the life of Openheimer was described in great detail.
In general, it was very interesting to learn more about the Manhattan project (I've never really studied it) + I'm very curious about how many dialogues are reproduced for certain (especially the conversation with Truman).
I clearly have a claim to the choice of the main actor (he is pure Irish), and playing a pure Jew is purely visual dissonance; I can say the same about the actor who played Einstein - the image turned out to be too comical.
The result: for a historical film 8/10.
Nolan has opened up a new side for me, but it seems to me that he makes a more significant contribution to culture as a director of fantastic films.

Watching in IMAX was worth it, there was a reason for this calculation. But once is not enough to delve into the history in detail. In three hours, there are a lot of actors, surnames, quick frame changes, dialogues and jumps along time lines

The film was shot by Christopher Nolan, whose name is familiar to many, and runs for three hours. At the same time, it does not sag, does not tighten, but everything is smooth, clear, to the point. The acting work in the film is just great! And the cast is impressive, although the same Gary Oldman appears in just one scene. But Matt Damon, in the role of General Leslie Groves, is gorgeous, and not only him! Interestingly, I saw a mention that there are no Negroes in the film. This is not quite true, Ron Auguste, who played nuclear physicist Jay Ernest Wilkins, appears for a few seconds. But this man was actually black, he was also called a "Negro genius." In all other respects, Nolan adheres to the historical truth (well, maybe they added something from themselves in the dialogues) and does not shove Black actors instead of white historical figures, which is now rather an exception, alas. I liked the movie, despite the fact that I don't really like such biographical movies, and then there's also about politics. I must admit that the propaganda is still excellent in Hollywood, regardless of whether it is fiction or some other genre, but ours with the collapse of the SSSSR could not even close to such a thing. I hope no one will come up with the "bright" idea of buzzing "our answer" about Kurchatov. I will not recommend it, after all, the film is for an amateur and very long, decide for yourself.

I watched in Aimax and the moment with the bomb tests is breathtaking and at the same time it is shown quite funny in terms of preparing all the characters for viewing (in general, watching explosions there was even perceived as an entertainment, I somehow got to the exhibition of photos from all these events (there were a lot of tests, to by the way) and people really sat on folding chairs and looked at them with protective glasses, as if at a movie show).
Most likely, from the whole film a year later, I will only remember this moment, because..
according to the plot, for me it was an ordinary documentary about all the events (although I had watched some documentaries about Oppenheimer before, and they were more informative), just shot super-epic. The film is about everything in a little bit, but at the same time about nothing in particular: a little physics (the process of creating a bomb is not disclosed to me), a little personal love drama (I didn't get into his mistress at all for a couple of these episodes, the wife is revealed a little better), in places about friendship, a little about the war (in general superficially), partly about moral choices and dilemmas, at the top about spies, communists and special services (also not too well disclosed, so their family was a nightmare, followed and searched, and this is mentioned only for a couple of seconds in the hearings), a little about Oppenheimer himself, and most of all about politics.

Honestly, Nolan fans (I love him too, by the way), would you understand that this is a Nolan movie if you didn't specifically go to Nolan's movie? Perhaps he deliberately did not wind up everything that he likes to wind up, so as not to shift the emphasis from the story of a real person, but in this case, this accent was not there for me anyway - the scientist's story was too interrupted by the rest of the plot branches scattered around.

By the way, I was very reminded of the impressions of the film from Chazelle "Man on the Moon " - there, too, the director did not seem to reveal his potential, but simply followed the story and showed "well, in general, it seems like that was it, look. Thank you".

In general, everything is fine, there is something to think about. The beginning of the entourage was a little reminiscent of Chernobyl from eichbio, although the pace so that you understand the film is wild, up to the credits never yawned. Almost three hours of dialogues. The Dolby Atmos sound of Oppie's panic is felt on 10 of the 9 roofs that have gone. In addition to Murphy, Downey Jr. and Matt Damon, Emily Blunt plays well as Oppie's wife. Only her best roles in films are remembered, such as: the first Sicario and the edge of the future.

The caste is simply incredible!!!
The film causes a storm of emotions, feelings, empathy and even contempt. Despite all the contradictions of Robert Oppenheimer, at the end of the film I fiercely despised Strauss... How narcissistic you have to be to decide that Oppi was setting scientists up against him. And just as vindictive to arrange a lynching in the circle of a pack of hyenas. The conversation between Oppenheimer and Einstein at the lake was very responsive and postponed ... How clearly Albert laid out what awaits Robert. And how you need to love science so that knowing all the consequences you can still go this way.
P.S. I take my hat off to Oppenheimer's wife. Knowing the whole essence of her husband, staying close is worth a lot.

One of those films that you will not be going to review soon, but you will remember for a long time. I looked at the cinema and did not lose, I think this is the only true option. The film itself is very interesting and intense. I had no problems with these timeline jumps and understanding what was going on. I came out of the cinema loaded, of course, but with such a pleasant fatigue and satisfied. I still don't understand how the story of the creation of the atomic bomb, the life story of Oppenheimer and the life story of the man who ruined his life fit there. How it fit in and formed into an excellent holistic story, which I watched with pleasure after work. Nolan Bravo!

If you haven't watched, don't read, there is a spoiler of the movie idea.
Oppenheimer's invention still keeps the world from global wars. Yes, there are conflicts, of course, but thanks to nuclear deterrence, they do not escalate into large-scale ones. And I hope people have enough brains to remember the message of such great people as Oppenheimer and others like him, so as not to get into the craziest war - a nuclear one.
One way or another, progress cannot be stopped. Nuclear power would have been invented not today, but tomorrow, not by him, but by someone else. But the world we have now is the merit of those who took responsibility for their invention and defended the idea of nuclear deterrence of countries in international politics. It gave us the world that we have to this day (globally).
Considering our CIS problems today, the film appeared to the world very timely. It is quite important that people, in terms of information and ideas, be aware of the whole problem of nuclear weapons, tell others about it and therefore ideologically prevent the top from making ill-considered decisions. Because it is possible to throw it off, but as with defenseless (in nuclear terms) Japan will not work. To do something like this today is a one-way ticket to the whole world

A strong movie about a strong man. When you are not just a scientist engaged in research at the cutting edge of science, but unwittingly become the arbiter of fate and the creator of the deadliest weapon ever created on earth, when the whole world's geopolitics depends on you, when you finally realize that you can destroy the world with the push of a button, it's hard not to go crazy. These three hours flew by in one breath, lived together with the hero, Nolan, as always, is brilliant and skilful in forming tension and narrative lines. Well, the mustachioed James Bourne certainly amused. I was waiting for him to talk to Oppenheimer about the Treadstone project.

A wonderful movie.
It was difficult to follow the narration at the very beginning and remember the names of all these people if you were not in the topic initially. But gradually you get involved.
The soundtrack and the representation of anxiety were particularly hooked.

Three hours in a movie in the ass of the city and about 500 rubles for a ticket in a stuffy crowded hall were definitely worth it.

I watched 3 hours in one breath. Some moments were difficult for my humble mind, but it didn't stop me from watching a drop

In fact, everything is fine in this film: the acting, the cast itself (you sit the whole movie and rejoice as soon as a new character is introduced), the meaning of the whole story, the color correction is wonderful.

I came out of the cinema in limbo and with some kind of heaviness on my soul

If there was an opportunity, I would have given the film 11 out of 10

This creation is something great, even if it ruins lives and the world. It's still great. And even if moral torment and inexplicable pain follow. Hatred of people and the world. Or its complete collapse. It's still great. Inexplicable, but great.
This is a super moral and ethical choice, but it is impossible not to realize what is spinning in my head, which will be a super achievement.

The last part shows the entities, shows the environment, reveals all the cards. She collects all the smeared ideas into one. Compresses into one small point, which explodes at the thought of Strauss, etc., and the sound wave and explosion covers when talking with Einstein. That the endless chain reaction they feared was already underway.
These words brought tears to my eyes. To trance and prostration. To a fierce vulnerability when accompanied by music.

And as they said, like a spoiler, the bomb exploded. Yes, it exploded, but the bomb was not there, it and its explosion were at the very end.

Then 2 hours of boredom ...
and only the last hour of the film gives at least some liveliness.
Well, at least they showed that the villains are politicians, not scientists

For those who are really interested in learning about the device of the bomb and how it was invented, I would recommend watching a video by Oppenheimer from the Veritasium channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xzv84ZdtlE0
Many things will become clearer. Still, in my opinion, the film is more about the consequences for the inventor of the atomic bomb and how the state treated him, what about the atomic bomb itself.

A good movie, I spent all three hours like a glove and it seems that in places I even forgot to blink. Believe me, at my age this happens almost never. Probably the best movie I've seen this year. Virtuoso production, excellent acting. I just want to sit down and watch it again.

But at the same time, still. But. Nolan did not cope with the hero. I never did. But on the other hand, who could?

@Ytzin: it's funny, the movie doesn't go out of my head, I somehow want to explain everything. In general, a couple of notes, and this is not criticism (I would like to criticize), I want to understand.
1. As far as I understood without reading Prometheus, the book was a bit provocative. 2005, all the participants died long ago, although of course there are still many eyewitnesses who are ready to quote the Bhagavad Gita and other anecdotes. So, before that, the story of taking away Oppenheimer's pass by the watchmen, as far as I understood, was fixed in the general consciousness as follows: there was a talented and slightly eccentric genius who fought for non-proliferation and there was an evil militarist Teller who dreamed of a hydrogen bomb (but Sakharov managed to get there before), who, in his militaristic malice, said everything against an innocent Oppenheimer. For which he was rightly ostracized in the scientific community. It wasn't just Kitty who didn't shake his hand. And then the authors of Prometheus come and say: everything was wrong! We got to the bottom of it! In fact, it was a Strauss conspiracy! And it turns out that the book, and then the film, begin to excuse Teller. And they were good colleagues with Robert, and other scientists had poisoned Teller before, even on the Project, and only a terrible woman did not shake his hand, and his testimony did not affect anything. And that in the end he also said good things, and not just about "misunderstanding". In short, this is a typical way of all publicists - to take something well-known and completely expose, that is, not only to accuse Strauss, but also to justify Teller.

@Ytzin: I'm not talking about which of these versions is closer to the truth (I think both are far enough away), with this historical truth, especially when there are a lot of eyewitnesses around, eager to citi... well, in short, here are all these magnificent witnesses, with her somehow constantly a little like in this quantum physics of theirs: until you look like everything is normal, but as soon as you start looking closely, it's already unclear what's where. There's an apple grandson denies, says there are no documents or evidence. Myth. And others no less confidently say yes, and the apple and the term and the treatment was (although how did he get burned if no one ate the apple? did you tell me yourself? This one could). So, I'm not talking about who's right, but about the scenery for the image that Nolan didn't get (or I didn't understand). I approach from afar.
So apparently point two will be tomorrow. Ek I was drawn to graphomania.

The movie is really long and I was afraid that I would fall asleep or score, but fortunately, it was interesting for me to watch. I didn't have enough quantum physics, not enough trial and error. And what was too much - Strauss's monologues. They didn't show the consequences of the atomic bomb to add more drama, because a person who doesn't know anything will think that it's just light and noise, but how people die... Well, no, we won't show it, watch another movie about it. Simply... It is not clear what scientists have created and what Opi was afraid of, for a person who just came to the cinema and does not know what the film is about. You can't come to the cinema, so to speak, after watching it earlier.

The powerful acting ensemble gives out a stunning performance, I don't want to repeat myself all the time, but Nolan is really a genius, otherwise how can I explain that I don't want to miss a minute of a three-hour film.
Just a delight.
My cinematic soul misses the scope of the Aimax, if it was cool for me to watch online, I can't imagine my emotions if I had a chance to go to the cinema.

Damn, I'm probably a movie bugger, but I have this movie... Well, he's good, but I didn't see much genius in him. It's just a very good and interesting movie. Well, yes, yes, an explosion without special effects. But if you hadn't been told that it was shot without special effects, then nothing would have changed in the film. Of course, where is Nolan and without flirting with the timeline. Now there are several of them here, events happen in all of them at once and it's not fucking clear. What is this? Where is it? Well, thanks, of course, for the color coding, but it still looks messy.

But yes, the story itself and the throwing of the person who created something so terrible (in fact, no) - this causes a response in my soul.

A great movie that makes you think, dig into history, delve deeper and learn more. I especially liked that Oppenheimer's figure itself is given different views, both as a monster, and as a repentant, and as a mad scientist, and you, the viewer, choose for yourself which position is closer to you and how you yourself will perceive him. The acting of all the participants is at the highest level (Downey in this makeup looks a lot like Stanley Tucci in places).

Are there any people among us who will explain to me why Los Angeles is dubbed when it's Los Alamos? The whole movie was jerked by this pronunciation.

PS - as a smoking person, I thanked heaven that I decided to watch the movie at home with pauses, and not in the cinema, Murphy smokes too aesthetically, I want to smoke myself right away.

I also remembered the Man on the Moon. but not because of the biogr. film. It's because of imaxa. in the movie Chazelle, imax is turned on only at the moment of going to the moon. and in Oppenheimer, it was possible at the time of the atomic explosion and after. Well, the genius knows best🤔

It was unexpected to see Nolan having sex scenes. Cece Florence Pugh
heard that Nolan was criticized for the lack of blacks and he rolled out an argument. and now for the 2-power women's roles. probably soon Nolan will make a movie with a woman in the head. roles.

offtop. I watched it on Dec 2. on the day of the launch of the world's 1st Enrico Fermi nuclear reactor. k-ry was shown in the film. it was built under the stadium.
Yes, I also Googled that Strauss the vindictive dick was involved in the Kennedy assassination.🤪
About setting the atmosphere on fire, I remembered Kuzkin's mother. The same concerns were about the tsar bomb. In addition, they were afraid to cause fluctuations in the earth's surface. They planned to blow up 100 megatons. but it was reduced by 2 times.

Gary plays Harry. Churchill was there. Truman is there. Gary Oldman has to play Stalin😁

The best film of this year is definitely.
Each actor is perfectly matched and in his place, the picture and soundtracks are on top. Even a moment WITHOUT music (the moment of explosion) - silence is the perfect soundtrack for this scene. I don't know who would have picked it up better)
3 hours passed very quickly for me and I had no desire to be distracted by anything.
I don't know how plausible this story is with Robert's real life, but the movie is amazing! Nolan is a genius as always!

Three hours of excellent dialogues, a minimum of action, and a maximum of driving narration in three different time periods from the case of Oppenheimer, a physicist who changed the world, he brought this world closer to new challenges. And Nolan does everything in his own style, a lot of characters, while everyone has something to say and it seems that everything is revealed from beginning to end.

The acting ensemble of the best, Florence Pugh, although it seems out of place, while the rest of the actors give heat, Cillian Murphy in particular gets all the attention (which is logical) and recreates a real historical character on the screen and not forgetting about his theatrical tricks and it is impossible to break away from the screen, so much you want to watch.

As a fan of history, especially the Second World War, I understand the context and motives of people, when creating a bomb, fears not only towards the 3rd Reich, but also the USSR, and the entire conflict in the United States, between conservatives and socialists, and all this is transmitted so maturely, the American nation goes so well with such films maturation and painful questions are asked and such wise answers are given. Wow, they scripted the fundamental period of the life of a lot of people and managed to concisely combine this with some touch of detective and vibe of the cinema of the 40s and 50s. What can we say about the message and the moral issue of everything that has happened and will happen. According to such a film, you need to teach children, so you can just take Nolan and include him in history lessons, and why not. Fuck it, we're turning it on.

And of course, when everything is visually on top, when they can show close to realism, and show physicists as smart and at the same time eccentric with their problems and families. And the EXPLOSION of the atomic bomb is probably the best moment of the film for many. And the entourage as if you were in those years and the color of these feelings helps to balance in the soul. It was as if all the stars had come together for an Oscar for Nolan and the whole team, such an original and imbued with love for history film, with no subsidence and no disadvantages, it was as if it was supposed to be released in 2023 and give us a lot of new seedlings for reflection and reflection, we were covered by a storm of events, and the creators are reaching out to us for reflection. I ended up with the same eyes as Dr. Robert Oppenheimer.

Visual: 15/15
Atmosphere: 15/15
Soundtrack: 10/10
Main characters: 19/20
Minor characters: 9/10
Plot: 29/30
Total Score: 97 (5/5 Green Zone).

I did not understand the general enthusiasm about this film at all. Watchable, informative movies for those who, in principle, watch biopics. A strong middle-class man in his genre, but no more. Moreover, it has typical genre disadvantages - in some places it is boring, in some places it is confusing, in some places it is incomprehensible, if you have not previously somehow familiarized yourself with the story being shown. Perhaps many people, like me, were attracted by the numerous stars. But, in my opinion, they did not manage to show themselves in this film at all (except for Killian Murphy, of course). Even outwardly they were unrecognizable. Therefore, I repeat, the movie is suitable for fans of the genre, but not outstanding.

I was the only one who found the explosion dull and boring, as if you expect there to be a visual riot now, and there, somewhere in a puddle, a firecracker quietly cracked. One of the biggest disappointments, like the trailer showed something else...it turns out it was just a compilation of footage scattered throughout the film. For a 3 hour movie. where a good hour of action takes place in a small cramped office...that's too much.

For a long time I couldn't decide whether to watch it or still spend 3 hours of my time on something else) After reading and hearing a lot of reviews, both bad and enthusiastic, I eventually made a choice. And unfortunately, the wrong one!

I watched it all night... it was enough for 1 hour and 30 minutes, I just forced myself to watch ... and it didn't end, although nothing interesting happened on the screen at all for me!

As a result, I didn't like the movie, but you will definitely watch it. It is considered great. The most tedious chore in the history of cinema.
It's a waste of precious time and a lot of it. And there is zero pleasure.

the first 1.5 hours of the film are a bit heavy due to the large amount of science and terms, due to the many characters that appear and appear endlessly. but how surprised I was when I realized in the second half that I remembered everyone.

I think it makes no sense to talk about a brilliantly chosen cast here at all... personally, Damon got into me the most, besides Murphy. but in general, the whole cast is amazing!

it is a pity that history still remembers a man of genius for only one invention....

I liked the movie. It was shot just great. The cast is amazing. You think about a lot when watching it. Although it seemed delayed in places, but at the same time it is clear why this is so. The nudity scenes seemed very inappropriate. In some places, the film seems to be trying to whitewash the act of the Americans (the atomic bombing of Japan), but in general it is clear that they tried to shoot Oppenheimer's biography. There is certainly a lot of politics in the plot, but it is the personality of the scientist that is at the center. At least that's what it seemed to me. Or rather, I personally focused on it when watching. I liked the dialogue between Oppenheimer and Einstein at the end. That's the whole point of the movie.

The film left a lot of emotions after watching and made us reconsider our views on our lives. After all, history is closely connected with politics. It is curious that it was in the current political situation that such a film was released, which, in my opinion, tries to justify the Americans in the situation with the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I really love Christopher Nolan's films, he always makes very deep films about the most important aspects of human life (even when he makes comic book films). But overall, the film is great and I do not regret the time spent and recommend it to everyone!

It's not a bad movie, but Einstein's reaction to Oppenheimer's words at the end is unclear. And I didn't understand why the girl in the Openheimer's didn't shake hands with the scientist at the end.
According to the film, it is very interesting, but the abundance of names and too much of the story is covered by 3 hours.
I think the series would be appropriate in his story, even a 3-episode one.
And so, it turned out to be a holopam across Europe.

This topic is touched upon a little in the film.

@vmerkalin99: He also called his actions strange and confusing and said that he was against his participation in the nuclear program, which is actually the most important thing in the context.

It's brilliant. Sometimes you forget how to breathe.

@Nataffka: Okay, every opinion has a right to be. But insulting a person because of their appearance is such a thing.
I don't really like him either, but he's very talented and very good at acting.

It's a great movie, but very depressing. I highly recommend watching it anyway.
