Overview

Nick Naylor is a charismatic spin-doctor for Big Tobacco who'll fight to protect America's right to smoke -- even if it kills him -- while still remaining a role model for his 12-year old son. When he incurs the wrath of a senator bent on snuffing out cigarettes, Nick's powers of "filtering the truth" will be put to the test.

Sometimes the most accurate way to talk about pain, fear, and the absurdity of the world is to laugh. These films take topics that aren't usually funny and transform them into comedies where the humor hides anxiety, anger, and the struggle to cope. It's funny not because it's easy, but because it's impossible to do otherwise.

The film is average in everything except for one nuance: there was no such level of cynicism in any black comedy. Especially the scene where three friends are arguing about whose industry is killing the most.

The film has a contradictory idea, and it's good that the ending does not consist in the fact that the main character died of lung cancer, otherwise it would be sad.

The book is generally great. And the movie is simpler.

Interestingly, not a single smoking character was shown in the entire film. And when Nick got to the hospital, I didn't realize until the last minute that he was a smoker, until the doctor said, "I never thought I'd say this, but smoking really saved your life."

And I thought the whole movie was so cynical. But in fact, this is our reality, in which tobacco corporations do everything to make their goods available. They came up with pseudo-safe tobacco heating systems, for example🤷🏻 But business is business...
