HBO has postponed filming the third season of "Euphoria" due to dissatisfaction with the script
Recently it became known that HBO postponed the shooting of the third season of the series "Euphoria", the production of which was to begin in the spring. According to sources, Levinson presented HBO with his first vision for a third season in the winter of 2023. He planned a five-year time jump and also suggested making Cassie and Nate, played by Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi, the main characters of the new series. The channel liked these ideas, but when Levinson showed the full scripts for the sequel, they didn't please Zendaya, the project's main star and the show's executive producer.
In early 2024, Levinson presented a new version of the third season script, but HBO didn't like it. According to the plot, Rue, the character of Zendaya, was supposed to become a private investigator. The channel immediately rejected the idea, as well as Zendaya's proposal to make Rue a surrogate mother — the producers felt that this plot move does not fit the tone of the series.
HBO tried to find a way out of the situation and even considered the idea of leaving Levinson from the series. The channel was also mulling over developing a movie or several specials for the project. But Variety's sources say that the show's actors, who are under contract for a third season, especially Zendaya, Sweeney, and Elordi, want to "bring the series to an end" with Levinson. Plus, "Euphoria" is too valuable an asset for HBO: the series has huge ratings and attracts a young audience.
Now Sam Levinson — writer and director of all episodes of "Euphoria" — is working on a new script. HBO is preparing to start filming in 2025. The third installment will likely have six episodes, but the channel is willing to expand the season if Levinson wants it.
