It so happened that "negroes" is an offensive word. It's unlikely that Christie deliberately put a racist subtext into the little number — most likely she didn't notice it — but today it reads too clearly. Therefore, it is more reasonable to replace the designation of the race with something more neutral - for example, soldiers. I repeat, it doesn't matter for the plot.
