Overview

The story of Alias Grace follows Grace Marks, a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who, along with stable hand James McDermott, was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery, in 1843. James was hanged while Grace was sentenced to life imprisonment. Grace became one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of 1840s Canada for her supposed role in the sensational double murder, and was eventually exonerated after 30 years in jail. Her conviction was controversial, and sparked much debate about whether Grace was actually involved in the murder, or merely an unwitting accessory. The mini is inspired by the historical true story of convicted murderer Grace Marks and based on Margaret Atwood's novel.

@irenemaslova: in my opinion, everything is quite transparent here - this is a split personality (and no, not schizophrenia), as it is popularly called, or in a clever way, as they write in Wikipedia, dissociative personality disorder: "The causes of this disorder are severe emotional trauma in early childhood, repeated extreme physical, sexual or emotional violence, as well as other mental illnesses that were not previously identified. This disorder is an extreme manifestation of dissociation-a psychological defense mechanism in which a person begins to perceive what is happening to him as if it is happening to someone else." In general, at first Grace was mistreated by her father - he beat her, sexually harassed her - then she witnessed the death of her first friend because of a criminal abortion (however, there could not have been others then). All this was superimposed on the belief that the soul of the deceased should be released, and Grace did not have time to do this, and all this for her in her own mind served as an impetus for the development of a second personality inside - the personality of the deceased friend, Mary Whitney. Well, "Mary Whitney" was already doing everything she wanted, because she was a brave and courageous girl (this is how Grace saw her, so Mary "settled" inside the main character), who turned out to be dead because of the cruelty of her time. Well, the subsequent awakenings of" Mary " inside Grace provoked episodes of ongoing violence in the Kinner house: Nancy, who abused her, then Kinner, who seems to have raped her after all (the episode where he searches for her all over the house at night and finds her), McDermott, who harassed her. Such things. At some point, Mary's personality began to take over more often than usual, and it turned out what happened: Grace directed her deeply hidden aggression and pain against Nancy, who tormented her, and reminded her of the mistake that the real Mary Whitney made (getting closer to the owner, albeit against Nancy's will), and against Kinnear, well, for obvious reasons.

When Grace was released and taken to the "gentleman she has known for a long time," I was sure Jeremiah would be there. And here's a twist.

You can mince it, but it's terrible that a man's desire to have sex led (and still does) to such consequences, and women have been paying for it with their lives for centuries.

And I am very glad that I do not live in the XIX century, but in the XXI. ;)

It's a pity to part with the beautiful Mary so quickly. It is especially sad that the death of a bright and kind man had little effect on the people around him.
