This is a technique of staging, when an element is introduced into the plot, seemingly insignificant, but which eventually turns out to be important for the denouement. Like a gun that was hung on the set at the beginning of the play, and at the end of it the character was killed

It's funny that they didn't show that Charles was somehow worried that his first romance after a long break turned out to be with such a psychotic lady. They seemed to admit their sympathies to each other there, and so far in the new season it has never been seen that Charles was at least somehow offended.
