I went to the movie knowing only who the director was. I was freaking out when I saw Robert, how gorgeous he is here! And the movie looks in one go. It's a pity that it failed at the box office.

I was writing a review at the time of the film's release, so some moments may be outdated.

A little less than ten years ago, in a review of, if my memory serves me correctly, The Dark Knight Rises, I wrote something in the spirit of even the worst Nolan film is better than 90% of what Hollywood gives out. The argument is far from the director's worst film, so, by definition, it is an event. Basically, if you believe in Nolan, then you can safely stop reading my opinion and buy tickets - a really sharp argument (I promise not to pun on the name anymore) in order to escape to the cinema at least once in six months. Now, to the point. I will treat the master with respect and will not even retell the plot - fortunately, in the promotional materials for the film, the filmmakers tried (and quite successfully) to reveal the minimum number of cards on the hand. So what should you know? Finally, the Brit has removed his ultimatum James Bond. This does not mean that I have stopped believing that Nolan is simply obliged to make an official film from the 007 franchise, but literally all the attributes of a spy thriller are in place here and now (well, maybe except for a martini with vodka, shaken, but not mixed. In their place is diet Coke, which is more important than it might seem). According to my personal feelings, the argument is very much like Casino Royale with Craig, in particular, and the spherical adventure of the English spy, in general. Here you will find similar mise-en-scenes, and dialogues shot against the background of extremely beautiful landscapes and specially built scenery (dialogues, of course, could be filmed in the back room, or even do without many, but then what kind of spy movie is this?!), and action scenes in mandatory places for this genre, and extremely confusing plot moves (which, in fact, turn out not to be so confusing), and la femme fatale, and villainous villains, and, to give it its due, a truly charismatic main character played by John David Washington (I didn't really like Denzel's son in Black Klansman, but it was absolutely not annoying here).

Moreover, in these artistic tropes, somewhere Nolan does MI-6 stories, bringing the narrative to the point of absurdity: the main character has no name, but he calls himself very modestly the Protagonist (the Narrator from Fight Club immediately comes to mind) and XXXX from "Puff Pastry"), the protagonist (or, if you like, now the Protagonist with a capital letter) has, according to the laws of the genre, unlimited resources to turn the most difficult and impossible wishes, and gadgets. Or rather, one gadget, "time inversion", but so cool that Nolan actually builds the whole plot around it. Why, Nolan made the movie for him! What kind of characters are there?! Pfft, everything was started in order to spend two hundred million dollars on the reverse of the frame. And don't pretend that for two decades you haven't gotten used to the fact that Nolan inserts one insanely cool idea into his film (maybe even smelling of mothballs), breathes new life into it and squeezes out all the juices, closing the topic so that the rest of the filmmakers don't even undermine their nose. The name of the director has long become a brand, and the argument is actually a reference representation of all the advantages and disadvantages of the maestro's handwriting. A large number of technical characters who appear solely to convey some idea, help in completing the next mission and serve as the next step in the path of the main character. The permanent Sir Michael Caine, Clemence Poesy (Fleur Delacour was especially offended for two minutes of screen time), Aaron " Kick-Ass" Taylor-Johnson, Himesh "Yesterday" Patel are present for show. Any nouname making his way in Hollywood could do their job. And here are some kind of wedding generals, whose "characteristic" posters can be hung in the halls of cinemas. Some of them appear once and for a short time, others periodically return and sometimes for a long time, but this does not make it easier. The femme fatale is very standard in all respects (not Eva Green, no), the villainous motivation is funny, but no more. So it turns out that two characters are more or less revealed here: the main character and his partner.

That's who, without fooling around, is really good from start to finish - this is Robert Pattison, who is on the hook for the Protagonist. I would even say that Patisson is the soul of the film). An extremely cute character turned out, and it is clear that the actor approached the image very responsibly. As they say, my respect. Glory to Krishna, the times of Twilight (oh, about twilight, by the way, there is a funny Easter egg in the code phrase of local spies - pay attention. Well, since we're talking about funny facts, the argument looks like a Harry Potter homecoming party: Delacour, Diggory, Goldilocks Locks) is behind, and the man chooses extraordinary projects where he opens up and comes off to the fullest. But even the relationships in the duo of the main characters really open up and come to life closer to the finale. So, if you are one of those who likes to accuse Nolan of callousness and mathematical approach lately, the argument will not change your opinion. On the other hand, at any time I will trade an armful of Marvel/Disney blockbusters, with tortured "I don't feel well, Mr. Stark" for one British project. The director, as always, takes the other. And, damn it, how good is Nolan at making the callous heart of an experienced filmmaker beat more often.

I'll say it bluntly, " The argument" is really revealed only in the second half of the film, before that it does not cause puppy delight, but rather a thought "well, Nolan holds the bar, but somehow uncertainly", however, closer to the finale, the director bawls out all trunks (literally and figuratively: hundreds of extras recruited from professional military personnel, abuse of the brain, which is trying to make sense of who is doing what at a given time, excellent suspense with the same excellent battle scene). For the last couple of dozen minutes, you will experience an incessant cinephile orgasm there. And, by the way, note: in the whole film there is almost the minimum amount of computer special effects that Nolan has ever had. He himself says that even in some average romantic comedy there are more computer graphics - and you willingly believe in it. The picture is licked and thought out to the smallest detail, and the soundtrack causes goosebumps. The music resembles Zimmer's work, but the composer was Oscar-winner Ludwig Joransson, who flawlessly embodied the sound solution of time inversion in the melodies. I will not explain, it must be seen / heard. I will say, however, that visual color finds, as well as the musician's techniques on a subconscious level, help to figure out where what is happening, even if you consciously did not have time to comprehend it yourself. Yes, there are two more troubles (or advantages?) Nolan. Nolan likes to complicate things. He will take any simple idea and bring it to his dissertation. But at the same time, Nolan likes to explain. And persistently, several times, and not counting everyone around you who is stupider than yourself. So if you don't fully understand everything, then you will understand enough to enjoy the movie. Maybe that's why he is equally loved by intellectuals and the comic-book-educated public? That is, it seems like we are talking about smart things and, it seems, even in smart terms, but we will chew them even for those who like to poke into the phone during a session. They will even say a couple of times what exactly they will do and in what sequence. Quite according to the canons of James Bond. Although, in my opinion, not where it needed to be said. And where it was necessary to say exactly what was going on, they did everything without explanation. Again, in my opinion, the plot, its ideas and the underlying twists are quite simple. Well, either I reviewed and reread too many works related to problems with time, and figured out the turns quite early, although I didn't bother much about it and still got high, because Nolan constantly stuffs you with information, then beautiful views, then action — you just can't keep up with everything. You've just figured out the last nut with the events, and you're already behind by a couple of problems thrown up during the realization of what is happening. Again: you can scold Nolan for what they always like to blame him for, but he is one of the few modern filmmakers who returns an uncluttered sense of delight in cinema, and often with seemingly simple techniques, but elevated to the absolute.

Well, let's wrap up with two thoughts. First, let's admit: Nolan is quietly building his own single cinematic universe (not as openly as Tarantino, or not as suddenly as Shyamalan), so you give a crossover between at least the Beginning and the Argument. The teams of Cobb and the Protagonist would look great in the same frame. Or you can also use Interstellar! Hmm... It seems to me that Nolan lost Time himself in poker and now pays back his debt by making films where it is the main engine and object of attention in all its manifestations). And secondly... You know what, I can't resist finishing the review with two words. And, no, not for the reason that the Argument is a masterpiece for all time. He's not like that. It has pros and cons. However, due to what and how the master does from year to year... Nolan is a genius.

@Mik_Dzisko: I'm going to throw beads in front of pigs, and prove something to myself on the Internet, but you still won't believe it, but I have a wife, a child, a job, and a hobby (one of them) is to write reviews of movies and TV series, including in my own groups in various social networks Yeah. So your "funny" joke is not at the box office, a person with an overdrive compared to the average viewer of watched TV series and a profile registered on a special site for marking watched episodes and leaving comments.

@Mik_Dzisko: Yes, for God's sake. It's just strange that on a site where many write detailed comments, claims are thrown in the style of ko-ko-ko, someone does not have a personal life and work. Well, what did you start to lose with FringeMania? Especially the review? Especially with the same opinion. At the same time, not immediately, but after a while (apparently, as the pros went), I did not minus you. Strange people, really. "I apologize " and go minus to put 😂 Well done. Purely hormonally unstable teenagers.

Nolan is probably a genius - to write a palindrome plot with backward time flows. paradoxes, etc. and it should be very difficult to link everything correctly in the film.
But I didn't understand a lot with all these temporary jokes, so I had to read the description of the plot on Wikipedia almost immediately after watching it.
And if over time everything became more or less clear, there were questions like: why transfer some kind of nuclear artifact in the opera?", "why do two members of a secret organization have to risk bungee jumping into the house of another member of the organization, they have absolutely no communication between agents there?", "the hero is ready to give the artifact (dangerous literally for the whole world) to the enemy, because he threatens one woman whom the hero met quite recently, seriously?".
Maybe I didn't understand something, maybe I'm digging into the details in vain, I don't know.
In general, the film is interesting, it will need to be reviewed already with knowledge of the plot, so as not to sit for a lot of time not understanding anything

Perhaps Nolan's worst film. The most boring, the most confusing and incomprehensible, and probably the most ill-conceived, if you try to sort everything out.

Structurally, of course, the film is easy to break up
But I'm still having fun! The only film of the future Sir Nolan that I have watched more than once (already 3) Was shot - great, and the soundtrack is crazy! Especially in scenes where they are in inversion!
Well, Pattinson, how good is this man..
