Hayley’s a smart, charming teenage girl. Jeff’s a handsome, smooth fashion photographer. An Internet chat, a coffee shop meet-up, an impromptu fashion shoot back at Jeff’s place. Jeff thinks it’s his lucky night. He’s in for a surprise.
The heroes of thrillers are not always noble defenders of justice. Sometimes the main character is not the one you want to cheer for. Manipulators, murderers, criminals, and just morally ambiguous individuals — in these movies the viewer unwittingly finds themselves on the side of those who have clearly crossed the line.
To be honest, I don't even know how to write a review of this film. I don't know how to describe the theme that the filmmakers reveal to the audience, and the emotions that arise inside after watching, while not revealing the plot itself.
The creators of the film "Lollipop" raised one of the burning topics of modern society, namely pedophilia. This topic not only causes a lot of negative feelings, but also causes unwillingness to consider it, so many simply will not want to watch this film. I saw a vivid picture of such reluctance when I worked in the film distribution. When people uttered the word "pedophilia", they flatly refused to take this film, and no amount of persuasion could change their minds. Yes, there are many terrible things in life, but in my opinion, you should not turn a blind eye to them. Apparently, the creators of Lollipop adhere to the same position, offering their audience an interesting and at the same time frightening thriller. It's absolutely not the picture that scares you, not the cinematic moves and so on… The feeling that arises after watching it is frightening. White becomes black, and black becomes white. It is difficult to write about this film in general terms without referring to specific scenes. The most important thing is that the film sets a question firmly enough, the answer to which every viewer must find for himself. Who does the viewer want to be: a humanist with his hands tied or an executioner, but with his head held high?
What can be said about the film itself? "Lollipop" is a very well-constructed psychological thriller, quite dynamic and absolutely not overloaded with anything superfluous. Almost the entire film is based on two actors: Patrick Wilson and Ellen Page, who did a great job with their roles. It was the play of the two actors that created a unique atmosphere in the film, which is fascinating in its own way. It is also worth noting the excellent work of the operator.
I advise all fans of high-quality psychological thrillers.
