Based on Arthurian legends and unlike most of the movies and books this TV-show displays how a friendship starts to grow beetween a young future to be king and a young wizard. They become friends in spite of all the differences between them. The creators of "Merlin" confessed that "Smallville" has been a huge inspiration to them. Like Clark Kent, Merlin should hide his ability to use magic and find his way around everything that happens.
